This three-part CPD will cover:

Session one – an audit of personal subject knowledge and confidence about teaching phonics; outline of phonics and its role in the wider curriculum; should we stream or is whole class teaching better; discussion about current practise and what teachers and TAs would like to develop / improve about their own practise; discussion about current planning and activities that are regularly used in the classroom and practical activities to give a taste of how to enhance current practise.There will be a GAP task.

Session two – discussion about the GAP task and how it went; a more in-depth look at planning creative activities and taking phonics outside; lots of practical activities; differentiation in phonics and how to develop lessons for more and less able pupils; phonics and ICT.There will be a GAP task.

Session three - discussion about the GAP task and how it went; looking more closely at the Phonics Screening Check and why it is important; preparing teachers for the check – what should we focus on? Preparing children for the check and parental support.Looking to the future – teaching pupils who are working well above ARE as well as SEND; an audit of personal subject knowledge and confidence about teaching phonics. Evaluation.

The outcomes of these three sessions will provide:

a clearer understanding of the importance of phonics in the wider curriculum

improved personal subject knowledge

a more creative approach (including the outdoor classroom) to planning for daily phonics lessons

improved understanding of the role of the Phonics Screening Check and how to prepare teachers and pupils for it

how to implement interventions in phonics

teachers and TAs with a bank of tried and tested ideas to use in a more engaging and diverse phonics curriculum
