Governors
Appraisal and Conducting Head Teacher Appraisal
This course is designed for all governors but those who have just been appointed to complete the Headteacher’s Appraisal will find this very helpful. We will go through the annual cycle, from target setting to monitoring to review, setting out the role of the committee and its terms of reference.
WGSP Chairs’ Network
One of the founding principles of WGSP is for our schools to work together, sharing expertise and knowledge to improve standards for the children in our partnerships. This is done well with the staff in our schools and we have established the WGSP Chairs’ Network to look at the ways in which our GBs can work together, sharing ideas and expertise. Our next meetings are:
Induction for New Governors & Refresher for Old Hands
A must for new governors! This course will introduce you to the role and with a detailed course handbook to support your learning we will focus on the key aspects of being a governor. We will highlight the questions that new governors will want to be able to ask to get an accurate picture of their school, signpost where further support can be obtained and talk data and prepare you for visits.
Ofsted and the New EIF – Lessons Learnt
This course will set out the process of inspection for new Governors and explain to all Governors the new expectation of Ofsted on Governors.
We will look at how Governors can prepare, review some of the questions that we might need to answer and talk about how we will show evidence of effective governance and impact.
Safeguarding: What Governors Need to Know
There is no doubt that the Ofsted framework has a strong focus on safeguarding, and in particular what governors know about some of the safeguarding issues which affect children and young people in our schools. Can you name the 20 issues which are defined in Keeping Children Safe in Education as areas of concern? This course will give you a good overview of the challenges facing our schools.

Jamie Pembroke, Sig+ The School Data Company
In order to be effective, governors must have a good understanding of school data and demonstrate that they are using this information to support and challenge the school leadership team and hold them to account. Data is available from sources such as the new Analyse School Performance system, the Ofsted Inspection Dashboard and the FFT Governor Dashboard. There are also a number of useful sources of data in the public domain.
This training will concentrate on Ofsted Inspection Dashboard, focusing on its content and how this should inform governors’ questions to head-teachers and senior leaders. A brief overview of FFT Governor Dashboard will also be covered.
Participants will gain:
An understanding of the key charts within the Inspection Dashboard
Knowledge of what the data is showing
An insight into how national and group comparisons are made
Help in framing questions based on the inspection dashboard that governors should be asking their headteacher and leadership team
This training is suitable for Governors of Maintained Schools and Academies
