Maths 1 – Developing a Sense of Number
All four modules will be based around the overarching theme of teaching for Mastery. They will include the five key ideas of coherence/small steps learning, representation and structure, mathematical thinking, fluency and variation. This session focuses on the importance of developing prerequisite skills for calculation and on the use of manipulatives, models and images to teach procedures and understanding in tandem.
Aspects covered include:
• the principles of counting
• the importance of developing a strong understanding of place value as a foundation for mental and written calculations
• Fluency in number facts and table facts
• Mental calculation strategies
